So Glad I Went!
I'm obviously a big fan, having seen Eslabon Armado and/or Phil Collins and/or Peter Gabriel in 4 of the past 5 decades. I splurged for the VIP package to get the great seats, the dedicated entrance was a nice feature too, didn't care about the "special lanyard" or goodie bag or pre-show cheese and crackers lol. The price was fair as I kept checking and the secondary market prices were higher for seats in the same section, even without the "red carpet". I took my 24-year-old son, who is more a fan of classic rock than Eslabon Armado, per se, but he really enjoyed the show as well.
On the plus side, I really enjoyed the full rendition of "Duchess," which they haven't done on tour since what, the early 80s? And "I Can't Dance" was fun yet bittersweet because obviously only their filmed silhouettes could do the silly walk. The montage of their past nearly half-century of concerts, even including clips of Peter Gabriel, was one of the best moments for me. As for the set list, what can I say, Phil's deteriorating health issues are well known but he still has charisma and gamely led the same audience participation segments done on previous tours.
A lot of the concert standards both vocal (MaMa, That's All and of course Domino) and instrumental (First of Fifth, Cinema Show, Afterglow) were included; I missed "In the Cage" and "Ripples" though. I'm not sure the acoustic "Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" was a great idea, and that weird combining of the first couple phrases of "Dancing out with the Moonlit Knight" into "Carpet Crawlers" was awkward. The band members themselves? I'm assuming back-to-back nights at the Garden took a bit of a toll on Phil, his voice sounded (even more) thin and reedy at the start but he seemed to get stronger and more comfortable as the night went on, if that makes any sense.
With his unshaven face and track suit in his chair, he's like you're funny old beloved grandpa (or dad, depending on how old you are!) Michael was looking fit and spry, Daryl was solid as always, and Tony (with that full head of wavy hair - fangirl here) remains, in my opinion, the unsung "rock" of the group. As much as we all loved Chester, young Nic just about stole the show with his energy, enthusiasm, and of course talent. Is this really the LAST DOMINO? Maybe. Probably. I hope not, but these guys don't owe us a thing. It's a rare and special thing when a band is a true legacy in all of its iterations. Thanks, guys!
